The hidden 98%
Sometimes advice feels like it’s research, such as this bit from this list: you see only 2% of another person, and they see only 2% of you. The lesson: Attune yourselves to the hidden 98%.
Values aren’t like a Gucci bag. I won’t see your values when I meet you. If I spend time with you, I’d learn what they are by simply asking or by observing what you routinely prioritize. The people you devote time and energy towards know your values. One way to confirm that notion is that they'll support your interests and challenge you on choices that conflict with your values.
The struggle is real when priorities conflict with values. Vitality, energy, and motivation often feels distant and unattainable. Coaching guides people to a level of self-determination that opens the hidden door to creativity and a growth mindset. When I collaborate with a client who is struggling to achieve a routine practice, I defer to evidence-based coaching. What they may perceive as a lack of motivation is often a lack of skill, an old pattern, a culture or environment that isn’t congruent with their values.
Take a moment to reflect on your hidden 98% and your social circle.
Are there people who aren't exactly on your cheering squad right now?
Whose cues are you absorbing from your surroundings?
And where do your values stem from?
Could you introduce some beneficial souls into your circle?
