Purpose and resilience
In April 2005, I sat in bed with my journal and bible, feeling the chaos of life with the support of my pillows. Anxiety and depression were making daily tasks overwhelming. Amidst the struggle, connecting with a higher power provided purpose and resilience, helping me navigate challenges with renewed strength.
A Yale MRI study had participants recall deep spiritual connections, unveiling a brain network in all humans that’s akin to comfort from loved ones. The tie between spirituality and resilience against depression — especially in times of stress — stood out.
For many people, spirituality is about purpose. When life gets tough, seeking purpose can help you persevere. By reframing challenges as opportunities to make meaning, you can create a space that encourages learning and transformation. Let's explore how you can design a dedicated space in your home to foster:
Context or lens on life lessons: Design an area that serves as a sanctuary for learning. Fill it with books, artwork, or artifacts that remind you of pivotal life lessons and inspire continuous personal growth.
Occupation or function to confront fears: Craft a space fostering connection to gradually face and overcome your fears. This could involve elements that you’re safe to connect with meaningful sources for courage and resilience.
Sense or emotional blueprint of self-compassion: Design a calming space that promotes self-compassion. Set up scenarios that remind you to treat yourself with kindness and understanding during difficult times.
Remember, our surroundings can influence our lifestyle. By intentionally designing spaces that encourage purpose and growth, we can navigate challenges with grace and find strength in the journey.
