What do you do when you experience stress from a colleagues behavior?
In childhood, we learned through our community and at home what to do with bullies or annoying people. Those environments created our socioeconomic and fraternal personality features.
Any feature of yourself that is not part of a health condition or health status is defined as the personal context that influences performance (WHO 2001).
GIG Design Consultants observe and service all of the following contextual factors:
- Expectations of Culture,
- Personal Beliefs and Customs,
- Behavioral Standards,
- Stage of Life and History,
- Relationship to Time, and
- The Non-Physical: Simulated, Real-time, and Near-time.
Our gender and education level are demographics that overlap into personal beliefs and customs. Personal context at an organizational level includes stages of life including millennial, retired or volunteer. ‘Supervisor’ may be a cultural custom or expectation of rank in culture. At the population level personal beliefs may be immigrant or community member.
Consider the personal context of your colleague when faced with stress. It’s a similar process to considering the first taste of a new cuisine. A first observance may be a disagreeing smell or appearance of the restaurant it’s served at. Beyond that may be a new spice or food to your palette. The challenge is to overcome the initial contextual observations to get to improving your sense of taste.
The willingness to create a new sensory-path may be the key to a lifetime change.
Contextual changes within a community provides both challenge and support. Community is defined as people gathering together for a common interest. Contextual factors that may hold back growth need the support and challenge of trial then error.
Communities that welcome trial and error openly welcome healthy changes.
Personal context may be changeable through awareness and by applying form. A Supervisor may be perceived unapproachable through body cues (crossed arms or poor eye contact) and the set up of furnishings (no visitor chairs or door closed).
How does an environment support gender, race, and age differences? Is there versatility to unite in one space?
Purposefully empower and mature contextual differences through the use of form.
Buy and position objects intentionally versus with emotional dissonance. Create your environment within the reality of context needs. Empower performance!
