How do your thoughts articulate each moment you experience? “I’m confidently griping the handle of this heavy meeting-room door, stepping into this meeting that will shape and sharpen feelings of fulfillment in my life.” Thoughts vividly characterize the body’s experience.
Our body senses every tiny thing before describing it with words. This phenomenon directs behaviors. The brain encodes then decodes sensory stimuli then informs the nervous system how to respond. It then links to our subjective frame of mind. Since we’re creatures of habit everything we currently avoid was first formulated through an unpleasant past experience. Behaviors demonstrate how the body stores then processes sensations into action.
Awareness of your unique sensory response, understanding metaphors, your internal dialogue, and an abstract representation of your self mediates behavior response. How do you discover your unique sensory response?
Step One: Be intimately involved with your body.
Awareness of the level of sensitivity you have is significant to understanding your behaviors. For example, you can’t stand tags on your shirts. Maybe extreme temperatures are manageable. Or anger surfaces when a person bumps into you. Your unique sensory variables are long and wide when considering tastes, odors, noise, touch, pressure responses your body avoids, seeks, or lazily responds. Begin by identifying intimacy of movement, temperature, and space variables.
Step Two: Add your avoid, seek, and lazy sensory responses to a living list.
Occupational therapists are skilled clinicians in the sensory realm. This online questionnaire is a great step to broaden your scope on all things sensory. There are strategies to help your body prepare or cope if your sensory filter is “leakier”than others. Through this your vocabulary becomes enriched. What was once a bother is now an informative behavior. Results become a positive, life-giving experience!
Step Three: Create a list of positive behaviors and outcomes you’re maturing into.
Delve into the whole aspect of wellbeing. GIG Design‘s purview of wellbeing includes an individual’s physical, occupational, intellectual, spiritual, social, and emotional behaviors. They are interdependent behaviors, yet separate to lifestyle issues. Knowing each behavior fosters goals that are achievable. This simplifies seeking affirming words relative to the lifestyle behavior.
Step Four: Observe the metaphors in your day to day.
Fuel up your imagination. Believe those small, day-to-day experiences are your Teachers. Listen to this true story: A Client quietly took up smoking. In secrecy they resorted to flushing cigarette butts. A week later a deep sewer clog refused drain cleaners. A visit from the plumber resolved the clog.
The event of a sewer clog was the metaphor to this Client’s behavior. Secrecy, procrastination, emotional expense of an issue, time expense to resolve an issue alone, and cost of a professional taught them an unforgettable lesson.
Step Five: Rally in professional and relational support.
Life is relational. Seek trusted resources, professionals, strategies, and design schemes that guide your wellbeing pursuits. Over time, personalized wellbeing tactics achieve healthy behaviors. Design solutions include task environments and products used to achieve performance. Knowing the body’s sensory response brings wise investments in health and purchases.
