The day began with a mess of disorganization. Our team was out of synch and it cost valuable time. Every hour that morning another issue arose. The climax was financial catastrophe! This stress lead the team to emotional behaviors which created a different kind of work. Internal body regulating and mind work. The challenge was to remain calm through it all.

Being overwhelmed with stressful feelings causes confusion. Emotions are a vital part of us to sort through problem-solving.  Suffering rears emotions from childhood experiences then initiates personal boundaries – healthy or unhealthy. Our primal instinct is to act for safety in seeking feelings of comfort.

Feelings are stimulated by our senses. Our behavior is the reaction.

Often people express a reaction by being “full of” an overwhelming feeling. “I’m full of excitement!” or “I’m filled with sadness.” Feelings fill bodies in the same way food fills the stomach.

In 1863 Americans attested that soulful meant they were ‘full of feeling’. A half decade later it meant musically spiritual in the romantic sense. Soulful became a word to express the sensation of intimacy. Over the next fifty years this sensation attached with food, soul food.

Soul food derived from a natural progression of feelings – fullness, intimacy, food.

Society increased this food romance to exceed health boundaries. Actions became literal to the term – being full of food. Hungry or not, the reactive behavior to feelings of excitement or sadness were filling the stomach beyond measure. Soul food may suppress a full soul in exchange for a full stomach.

Is a belly full of food an intimate feeling? 

Food is fuel that affects performance skills and activity demands. Food choices are driven by values and the surrounding culture dictating what is readily available.

Food choices lay into daily patterns that:

  1. grips the amount we consume,
  2. the context in which we eat,
  3. and the environment of influence in the style in which we eat.

Napkin, anyone?

Food preparation and eating is an occupation called self-care.

Self-care management includes:

  • maintenance,
  • shopping,
  • meal preparation, and
  • cleanup.

This occupation includes interdependent roles because its reliant on farmers, retail sources, and those we cook with and for.

Just as the origin of soulful blurred over time our boundaries and occupations have, too.  

When sleep and rest are depleted the body and soul shout for a replacement – that ‘filling’ sensation.

Brands demand in commercials they fill that sensation. Their’s is comfort.  Cultures mistake eating as relaxation. Food becomes a prescription for an energy depleted body or emotionally tired soul.

These conditioned, learned patterns take place in our central nervous system.

It seeks comfort and safety. Sensible lifestyle and design boundaries may change patterns to improve health. Here are Five food obsession changers:

  1. Change what is used to engage food – renew discriminating sensory experiences.
  2. Change what is used in engaging with food – create new patterns of behavior.
  3. Consider food influences – design the surrounding conditions and environments.
  4. Consider the amount of effort used to prepare food and eat – observe body functions.
  5. Know the contributors – knowledge is power.

Pay attention to when you’re hungry, what your body wants, what you are eating, and when you’ve had enough. End the obsession because obsession and awareness cannot coexist.
